Net Zero Services
With most people living and working in urban areas, the green transition and energy efficiencies are vital in both mitigating and adapting to a rapidly changing climate. Net zero and energy efficiency strategies are being adopted across government and industry to reduce carbon emissions whilst driving through energy cost savings.

smart net zero is uniquely positioned to not only assist with this but actively monitor and deliver sustainable resilience and security across the net zero ecosystem.
‘Net zero’ simply means achieving a state where greenhouse gases that are emitted into the atmosphere by human activity (e.g., by burning coal or driving combustion engine vehicles) are balanced by removal out of the atmosphere (e.g., carbon sequestration technologies or tree planting)

01
Developing your net zero strategy
Create your net zero vision
Where do you want to be by say 2045? Establishing the ambition and the vision to achieving your goals are vital. It is essential to look at what is both realistic but also ambitious - take into account the regional geography and the wider socio-economic situation as well as what assets fall within your remit.

You need stakeholders to buy into this vision to take time to explore what is the art of the possible and what is the wider city or organisational structure that will be in place and how it currently operates.
02
Understand and explore the data
Data will be key in developing out and delivering on your net zero strategy. There will be gaps in what data is available but ensure you can access the most data available - whether it is greenhouse gas emissions or building energy consumption.
We work with organisations to gather these multi sources of data to understand where the focus and opportunities for success can come from, e.g. where are the emission hot spots, what is generating these emissions, what are the needs of the residents or occupants etc?
03
Create a credible routemap
To develop out specific pathways for your net zero journey, you'll need the data and then the corresponding models to develop out the various scenarios and milestones. How you can forecast and predict the net zero trajectory will align with your vision and one where we can add significant value in the tools that we use.

You will need several scenarios to meet a 'business as usual' approach and then one for a more ambitious one, e.g. meeting the targets sooner and a more pessimistic scenario where unforeseen challenges will impact the planned targets. Actions can then be produced to help mitigate or accelerate these scenarios.
04
Develop strong action prioritisation
After developing your pathways and leveraging the data, your actions will emerge. There will be a need to prioritise the actions on the pathway to net zero so you will need to develop criteria in how you assess, evaluate and prioritise these actions.

Consider areas like cost, impact on emissions, implementation time, resource or technology requirements etc. Developing your critical action path to achieve your vision and targets will require strong stakeholder engagement and methods to help validate your approach and the strategy underpinning it.
05
Communicate and share the strategy
The last step involves collating and combining all the findings from the first four steps into your final net zero strategy. This should provide transparent and measurable ways that you have developed and will monitor your net zero actions.

We have found developing a visual routemap for a strategy helps with stakeholder engagement and buy-in - clearly showing what are your foundational, interim and flagship actions to deliver your ultimate net zero vision.

We also assist in how you can monitor and evaluate the strategic actions by the different indicators and metrics used, tracked and refined in order to create a dynamic and agile strategy that you clearly communicate out regularly to key stakeholders.
